video games sure have improved since the original days of PacMan and all the old favorites of days gone by. Who thought back then that one day video games could be used to teach real skills or become so realistic and technologically advanced?
Rock Band is not only a game that is fun to do, but they also say at Harmonix music that if you can play the Rock Band drum set on the 'hard' setting, you should be able to play the drums for real! Question is though are you really drumming, or just following the pattern you see on the screen? If you can master the video game drumming, it doesn't mean that in you will be able to sit at a real drum set and be able to play. To play real drums you need to be able to read music. which you won't learn playing a game; excellent coordination and rhythm. If you can't read sheet music you may never be able to be a professional unless you are musically gifted and have the instincts to know what to play. Bands today don't use electronic drums like were so common in the 1980's . A real drum kit gives you actual control over the sound of the notes, their length, volume and more.
A real drummer will never need to buy World Tour cymbal repair cable, as they don't have cables that are poorly designed and almost always fail.
Even a small drum kit is far more advanced than the guitar Hero or Rock Band drum set. For a non-musician, I'm sure the thought of a real drum kit is intimidating! Ponder for a moment you're sitting behind an enormous drum kit, knowing that you are responsible for setting the rhythm for your band and they all depend on you. If you get to that point you are obviously a excellent drummer, but for a beginner even the Rock Band drum kit can be too much.
Learning drumming starts with knowing have to keep the beat. If you can keep rhythm, can you play the drums? Not really. Quality drummers need to add to songs with their creative touch as well as just setting the beat for everyone else to follow. You may not always think about the drums, but if you were to remove them out of the song I think you would notice for sure!
So, can a video game teach you to play the drums? Doubtful, but it can't hurt to practice. Get comfortable with the drums through the Xbox game, practice counting to four, and you are on your way to stardom! Just don't forget to grab a new guitar Hero cable before it breaks!
