How the People of Kenya Can Be Helped With Free, Clean Water
It's hard for most of us to imagine living somewhere that required us to boil water before using it. Even worse, imagine having to go out and scavenge for firewood in order to build a fire to heat the water. People in Kenya have to face this reality every single day. Their frequent burning of wood in their homes inhibits proper breathing since the air is so smoky. It's a problem that has gone unnoticed for decades, but finally someone has decided to do something about it.
The people of Kenya are being provided with free water filters and being taught to use them by a company known as Vestergaard Frandsen. As part of its Carbon for Water campaign, the company has shelled out approximately one million water filters. As the first international program funded completely through the carbon market, it is hoped that it will supply a sufficiency of fresh drinking water to millions of people living in Kenya for the next 10 years. Another added benefit of this program is that it drastically reduces carbon emissions each year.
The leading cause of death in Kenyan children under the age of five is diarrhea. This can most often be linked to contaminated drinking water. Respiratory infections are also a leading cause of death for the population of the country. Lung problems are the direct result of all of the air pollution the people have inside their homes due to running wood stoves to purify their water and do their cooking.
Vestergaard has assumed the initial cost of the filters as well as the responsibility providing for the labor of 4,000 people to go door-to-door installing the devices and showing the homeowners how to use them. The amount of firewood burned and the amount of water used are both tracked by auditors who collect statistics every six months. The auditors can then issue certificates which the company can sell for carbon credits. These carbon credits can then be sold to other companies in order to recoup the expenses incurred. It doesn't take longer than two years for all of this to happen.
Everyone involved in the Carbon Water campaign wins, including the people of Kenya, the environment, and the Vestergaard company. Hopefully, this plan can be expanded to provide fresh drinking water for other countries that need it. Doc No.lkhjsdklsd-ssj
