Professional basketball games generally take about two and a half hours to play.
Two baskets and ten players, five on each team, are the basic components of most basketball games. Score is kept by keeping track of how many times each team penetrates the other‘s defenses and scores goals. Employing either man-to-man or zone defenses, the defense tries to keep the offense from generating additional points.

Defensive players, depending on how strictly the rules are being enforced, often have leeway in how much contact they can have with offensive players. If they exceed prescribed limitations, it is called a foul and, in most instances, players from the offensive team are awarded an uncontested shot at the basket, called a free throw.

The act of bouncing the basketball is mandatory if the person with the ball in his possession wishes to move from Point A to Point B. The definition of dribbling is bouncing the basketball back and forth between the floor and the player. If the player takes more than one step without dribbling, it constitutes a rule violation called “traveling” and results in the transfer of possession of the ball from what had been the offensive team to what had been the defensive team.
Whenever an offensive player is fouled in the act of shooting, he is sent to the free throw line for two, and sometimes three free, unchallenged shots.
The two most prominent ways of scoring in a basketball game are with two and three point field goals, though free throws amount to one point each. Shots launched from behind the arc, a painted line a good distance from the basket, result in three points for the offensive team whenever the shots are successful. Shots made inside of this arc give the team two points.
The team with the most points at the end of the contest, broken into four segments at the high school and professional level and two segments at the collegiate level, wins the game. If the score is tied at the end of the game, the two teams will go into overtime and the team with the most points at the end of overtime becomes the winner.
The rules are very simple but basketball games result in some of the most highly watched and entertaining sports at every level of play.
