Professional basketball games generally take about two and a half hours to play.
In the game of basketball, two teams of five players play on a court with one basket on each end. Score is kept by keeping track of how many times each team penetrates the other‘s defenses and scores goals. The team without the basketball, known as the defensive team, tries to prevent this from happening by guarding the offensive players.

In addition to the standard two and three point field goals, players are given one point for every free throw they make. A player makes a three point play by shooting the ball from outside the arc, which is a painted line quite a distance from the basket. The definition of a two point basket is any successful shot on goal that was launched inside the arc.
The winner of the game is determined by which team has the most points when the time clock has expired. If the score is tied at the end of the game, the two teams will go into overtime and the team with the most points at the end of overtime becomes the winner.
The rules are very simple but basketball games result in some of the most highly watched and entertaining sports at every level of play.
